It was a first qualfying round tie which City, ho are second in the premier division of the Zamaretto League, were expected to win easily against their opponents who have yet to win in Division One of the Western League – which is four leagues below Truro.

And manager Sean McCarthy must have thought the same as he took the chance to rest a number of key players, but the Dorset visitors had other ideas.

They showed just why they had earned a stunning replay win at Western League premier division title challengers Dawlish Town in the previous round with a performance full of character and no little skill.

Ciity had started the game as if they would overrun Bridport with Watts having a overhead kick deflected wide and the same player then shot just over the bar.

But City were unable to build on their start as they seemed to lose their way in the heat and the game became increasingly scrappy.

And it was the visitors who took the lead after 38 minutes when a seemingly inoccuous effort from outside the area by substitute Matt Condliffe bounced awkwardly in front of teenage debutant keeper Tom Brooks as he dived to his right and found the back of the net.

Brook had come into the side in place of on loan Torquay United keeper Martin Rice as the Division Two club did not want Rice cup tied.

Manager McCarthy, obviously not happy at what he had seen in the first half, brought on Andy Watkins and Joe Broad in the opening minutes of the second period with Les Afful following midway through the half.

Watkins was denied by Bridport keeper Lee Cleal when the striker was clean through and Afful hit the post before City finally drew level with Watts heading home after 70 minutes.

In the final stages Truro piled forward in search of a winner with Afful shooting just wide with Watkins denied by Cleal who in the final minute produced a stunning save to turn away a free-kick from Watts.

Now Truro must travel to Dorset on Tuesday evening for a replay just what they did not want ahead of next Saturday’s home league game against third-placed Cambridge City.
